At the time it came out, the <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/porsche-935-77-41-spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Porsche 935<\/a> dominated the racing world. But compared to Porsche\u2019s turbo beast, the M1 was heavy, under-powered and unreliable &#8211; especially for endurance racing. Even so, a few teams invested in the car, and took them to the track. Though not exactly a privateer, BMW France was one such team. With official support from BMW\u2019s racing department, they fielded the <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/877\/41576704605_3deb156317_b.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M1 #83<\/a> in the IMSA class of the 1980 <em>24 Heures du Mans<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/a-h\/bmw_m1_83_02.jpg\" alt=\"Carte de France\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To this day the M1 is BMW&#8217;s most iconic model of the late 70s and early 80s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, what really made the car stand out was the livery. In a true art car fashion, car #83 had a livery that was a map of France, with all the BMW dealerships marked. With that, it became known as the <strong>\u201cCarte de France\u201d M1<\/strong>. The IMSA class that year had a grid divided by Porsches (935), Ferraris (512BB) and three BMWs (M1). There were two \u201cregular\u201d M1 and a third with a highly modified body. Of the M1, the Carte de France finished best, in 14th place overall and fourth in the IMSA class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/a-h\/bmw_m1_83_03.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Yes, that&#8217;s an accurate map of France. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the results of car #83 were kind of lacking, conversely the Carte de France livery was a success. Designed to draw attention to the M1 and BMW, it grabbed a lot of headlines, especially in France. It\u2019s probably the best known M1 to ever race at La Sarthe and paved the way for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/bmw-m1-munchen-71-minichamps\/\" target=\"_blank\">M\u00fcnchen M1<\/a> that raced in 1981. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/zgroup\/bmws_02.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">M\u00fcnchen M1 + Carte de France M1 = M1 art cars.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/grail.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2204\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>To a regular Le Mans collector it may not be very desirable, but for one who also likes art cars? Ah, then it\u2019s a must buy. I had this one in 1:18 from Minichamps and it was high on my list as soon as I started collecting 1:43. Unfortunately though the Minichamps version is not common to find, and the one from Quartzo is too shabby. So when Ixo released it last year, I was really looking forward to it. And Ixo delivered: a <strong>very<\/strong> nice model, in league with their current offerings.
