Nakajima\nTeam: <em>Toyota Gazoo Racing<\/em>\nRace: 8th overall (2nd in LMP1-H) at Le Mans in <strong>2017<\/strong>\nSpark - S5804 (resin) <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-medium-gray-color has-text-color has-small-font-size\">Published 05\/17\/19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The TS050 is the evolution of Toyota\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-doIlkvg27rg\/U5rsgftzaqI\/AAAAAAAAK10\/jUMZe-oipuQ\/s1600\/Toyota+TS040+Hybrid+car+%25237+on+its+way+to+pole+position+at+the+2014+Le+Mans+24-hour+racehr.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">TS040<\/a>, that the brand campaigned in the WEC in 2014 and 2015. Though the TS040 achieved consistent results, even with a third place at Le Mans in 2014, Toyota wanted a win. So the new car received quite a few changes. Probably the biggest was in the engine bay &#8211; gone was the aspirated V8, in came a bi-turbo V4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/p-z\/toyota_ts050_8_02.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Another victim of the red-white-black livery plague that affects current prototypes&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new engine was a 90\u00b0 V4 displacing 2.4 liters, with 16 valves and direct fuel injection. With the two turbos it could produce up to 493 hp. But being a hybrid, the TS050 also counted on electric power, with one electric motor on each axle. These electric motors, powered by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/image.slidesharecdn.com\/kineticenergyrecoverysystemkers-130103013522-phpapp01\/95\/kinetic-energy-recovery-system-kers-13-638.jpg?cb=1357177480\" target=\"_blank\">KERS<\/a>, allow a temporary burst of another 493 hp. So when the pilot wishes, the car becomes a 987 hp all-wheel drive monster. The chassis of the TS050 was a carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque, enveloped in a carbon fiber composite body. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/p-z\/toyota_ts050_8_04.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Though not as terrible as the 2016 race, 2017 was not Toyota&#8217;s year again.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>24 Heures du Mans<\/em> of 2016 was heartbreaking, for Toyota and racing fans alike. To see the leading TS050 #5 stop on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemans.org\/media\/cache\/media_l_w\/assets\/fileuploads\/57\/66\/5766a6f2b5737.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\">track side<\/a> with only minutes to the end of the race\u2026 So Toyota didn\u2019t want to take any chances, and for 2017 Gazoo Racing had <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/st.automobilemag.com\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/06\/Toyota-Prototypes-01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">three cars<\/a> on the track. Unfortunately though, Le Mans is not an exact science, and only <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/racingnewsworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mexican-mission-for-toyota-gazoo-racing.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">car #8<\/a> finished the race. Porsche won again and Toyota was still out of a Le Mans win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/p-z\/toyota_ts050_8_03.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Spark at it&#8217;s finest.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately however, in 1:43 scale, #8 is a winner. Spark once again did a fantastic job on the model, and it\u2019s stunning. Even so, I doubt this one will be of much interest, except for the Le Mans and\/or Toyota fan. And of course, it&#8217;s nice to see the evolution of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"TS-020 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/toyota-ts-020-gt-one-3-altaya\/\" target=\"_blank\">TS-020<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2017 Toyota TS050 Hybrid #8 Pilots: S.
