The W196 brought Mercedes-Benz the Formula One championship in 1954 and 1955. The SLR name came from <em>Sport Leicht-Rennen<\/em> or \u201cSport Light-Racing\u201d &#8211; later on the SL-R became just SLR. Internally known as the W196S, it had a welded<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1955_MercedesBenz_300SLR-5-1024.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"> aluminum tube space frame chassis<\/a> covered by an ultra-light <em>Elektron<\/em> magnesium-alloy bodywork. The engine was a straight-8 with 2982 cm\u00b3 of displacement with an output of around 300 hp. For better weight distribution, it sat longitudinally just behind the front axles. A pretty sophisticated engine, with desmodromic valves and mechanical direct fuel injection.<br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/zgroup\/mercedes_03.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A car made for Le Mans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">By today&#8217;s standards the 300 SLR would be called a \u201csuper car\u201d. It was a truly remarkable machine, and had the potential to dominate sports car racing. But then the 1955 Le Mans race happened&#8230; Pierre Levegh\u2019s 300 SLR crashed in front of the grandstand, and the wreck exploded over the crowd. A total of 82 people died that day, with dozens more injured. The Mercedes team abandoned the race, and the manufacturer withdrew from racing for decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all Mercedes produced nine rolling chassis, and of these, two of them were <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/scontent-frx5-1.cdninstagram.com\/vp\/37f8c3ba3a4b317783bcea41654a3792\/5C46EA66\/t51.2885-15\/e35\/37050382_282901182462081_2138923056624566272_n.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">coupes<\/a> with gullwing doors. However, with the cancellation of all race efforts, Mercedes didn&#8217;t need these chassis anymore. They were going to be scrapped. Uhlenhaut then asked if he could transform <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/mercedes-benz-300-slr-19-diecast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"one of the coupes (opens in a new tab)\">one of the coupes<\/a> into his personal car. And Mercedes said <em>yes<\/em>. So he adapted a muffler system to the car and the <strong>\u201cUhlenhaut Coupe\u201d<\/strong> became the world&#8217;s fastest company car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/street\/mercedes_uhlenhaut_1955_02.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>There&#8217;s no question that Rudolf Uhlenhaut had a LOT of pull at Mercedes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a story about how Uhlenhaut, late for a meeting, got from Munich to Stuttgart in about an hour. Just as a FYI,  Munich is 220 km from Stuttgart and today that route takes 2h30m. In other words, the Uhlenhaut Coupe was <em>fast<\/em>. In addition, another cool detail is that the car exists to this day, and resides in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jHE4NVrnIW8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Mercedes-Benz Museum<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/street\/mercedes_uhlenhaut_1955_03.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Not a fantastic model but definitively a very good one.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/www.w-143.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/grail.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2204\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a model that I always wanted, just because the car is so friggin\u2019 cool.  Minichamps is the only brand that makes it, and being from an older mold, it\u2019s definitively not stellar. Overall shape and details are pretty good, but it doesn&#8217;t have the higher refinement of their current models. Therefor, until Minichamps reissues it (or some other <em>good <\/em>brand makes it), this is the best game in town.
