The traditional air-cooled 3.0 l flat-6 boxer of the SC was totally revamped and enlarged to 3164 cm³ but kept the same transmission (upgraded only in 1987). The new power plant produced 231 hp (207 hp for USA models) and accelerated the car from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and permitted a top speed of 242 km/h. With a very good performance like that, the lack of turbocharging did not hamper the luster of the car as a fast small sportscar, and from 1984 to 1989 over 76000 cars were produced.

Ah, the whale tail…

You could buy the Carrera in three basic models, coupé, targa and cabriolet, but from a distance it was very similar to the previous SC. The visual difference was that the Carrera had front fog lights integrated under the front bumper. “But it never changes!”, yeah, yeah, love it or hate it, that’s the 911 for you .

Despite the opening panels, shut lines are pretty tight on the model.

Also in 1984 Porsche introduced the M491 option, better known as the “Turbo-look”. It made the Carrera look like a 930 Turbo with the wide wheel arches and the distinctive “tea tray” tail, but also featured the stiffer suspension, the superior braking system and the wider wheels of the Turbo. However, because of the increased wind resistance the car was slower than the regular Carrera, but who cared?

There isn’t much engine to see even in the real thing, so imagine in 1:43.

In scale Kyosho recreated the 1984 Carrera with the boy racer (and mine!) favorite M491 package. And like my previous Turbo, front and rear open to reveal trunk and engine with Spartan level of detailing. Once again shut lines are really tight, so the car looks awesome with panels closed.

The trunk may seem big, but looks are deceiving.

Together with the Turbo and ’73 Carrera, this is the car that dominated my teens’ wet dreams about cars. Back then everybody had a poster* of a Countach on their bedroom, but not me. My dream car in the early 80’s would be either a 911 Turbo or a Carrera. So for me this little beauty is a very important P-car, and something I always wanted to have in scale. One more for the street list but I still have a way to go yet. I still have to get a 959, a Carrera 2.7 and a 993 GT2 Evo.

*: Just FYI, on my bedroom wall I had a poster of a red Lotus Esprit. No, I don’t like the Esprit, not even then. But since I didn’t want a Countach or a 308, it was the only darn car poster I found for my then new bedroom in 1983. Yeah, my bedroom was a bit sad.

1984 Porsche 911 (930) Carrera 3.2 Coupe Kyosho – 05522S (diecast) Published 06/15/18 First introduced in 1978, by 1983 the Porsche 911SC was getting long in the tooth, so in 1984 the Carrera 3.2 took it’s place.
