And he certainly made splash when debuted at Le Mans. He piloted non other than the famous <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwartcarcollection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/01-bmw-art-car-1975-30-csl-calder-09_1277x960.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">BMW 3.5 CSL \u201cCalder\u201d<\/a>. Though not the first art car (that would be the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/porsche-917lh-3-cmr\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHippie\u201d 917LH<\/a>) the Calder car is possibly the most famous. It\u2019s the car that started the let&#8217;s say \u201c<em>art car movement<\/em>\u201d at Le Mans. And it only came to be because <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spearswms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Calder-et-Herv%C3%A9-Poulain-%C2%A9-DR-courtesy-Artcurial-800x600.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Poulain convinced Alexander Calder<\/a> to use a race car as his canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/porsche\/race\/porsche_935_89_02.jpg\" alt=\"935 #89\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Simple and nice typical privateer livery of the 70&#8217;s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time he also founded &nbsp;a racing team. With that, he participated in the <i>24 Heures du Mans<\/i> many other times, as manager and as pilot. For the 1980 edition of the race he was again at Le Mans, but this time with a Porsche, the mighty 935. His 935 #89 originally left Porsche\u2019s Development Center at Weissach with a 2856 cm\u00b3 SOHC and 12 valve boxer-6, but the new owners started improving the engine almost on the same year. When Poulain got hold of the car it was sporting a 2989 cm\u00b3 twin-turbo engine producing over 600 hp.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/porsche\/race\/porsche_935_89_03.jpg\" alt=\"935 #89\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This side is what caught my eye &#8211; so far the most different front of all my 935s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Poulain\u2019s ride was chassis <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lemansphotos.com\/Site\/Gallery\/getpreview-23711,evenement-annee-1980-24-heures-du-mans-89-porsche-935-herve-poulain.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">#930-770-0904<\/a>, that started in 32nd. The car even suffered an <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lemansphotos.com\/Site\/Gallery\/getpreview-23714,evenement-annee-1980-24-heures-du-mans-89-porsche-935-herve-poulain.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">accident<\/a> but managed a steady climb to finish the race in 20th place. In the end it was 6th place in the IMSA class, 67 laps behind Jean Rondeau\u2019s winning <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/rondeau-m379b-16-spark\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rondeau M379B<\/a>. Nowadays Herv\u00e9 Poulain doesn\u2019t race anymore. He is involved with the auctions of art pieces and vintage cars, and Team Poulain is no more. But without a doubt he left his mark in the world\u2019s most famous race. Basically, he&#8217;s the reason we now have so many art cars that I love so much. Car #89 didn\u2019t achieve an expressive result by any means but being a 935 driven by Poulain himself and with auxiliary lights on the bonnet was enough to make me want it. Model-wise it\u2019s your average Spark &#8211; great detail &amp; great paint job, so a total winner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1977 Porsche 935 Pilots: H. Poulain, D.
