First revealed in July 2020, the car debuted in select races the following year while still in development. In early 2022 BMW deemed the M4 ready, and offered it to privateers. As the name implies, the M4 GT3 is compliant to FIA’s GT3 class – “Cup Grand Touring Cars”. A GT3 car is based on a regular-production road car model in production at the time of homologation. However, per regulations, the engine does not need to be production-based. With that, the M4 GT3 uses the same steel chassis of the regular M4, produced at BMW’s plant in Regensburg. Despite the “normal” production, it receives a welded-in safety cell and a permanently bolted racing seat. Because of the bolted seat, the GT3 gets an adjustable steering column and pedalbox.

Because of BoP, at Le Mans 2024 the M4 GT3 gained a 1% boost over 200 km/h.

Though BMW could have gone wild with the engine, financial reasons made them use a production unit as the basis. With that, they used the road-going P58 twin-turbo inline-6. Heavily modified, it has 2993 cm³ and four valves per cylinder, and can deliver up to 434 kW (590 hp). Of course, according to BoP, that output can be severely restricted. X-Trac’s G1337, a six-speed transaxle transmission and controlled by the ECU, handles shifting duties. And speaking of electronics, BMW supplies the car with adjustable TC and ABS and race data analysis. Covering everything up, the M4 GT3 has CF-reinforced plastic (CFRP) body panels. Moreover, the car comes with adjustable aerodynamic elements, air-conditioning and air jacks. Definitively a Thoroughbred racing machine, that can be yours for about US$ 600,000.

Despite racing in two classes, Team WRT didn’t have a great 2024 Le Mans…

For the 2024 season, Belgian Team WRT (W Racing Team – yeah, that’s two “teams” 🤔) bought two M4 GT3. The team had some good races, and their best result was a first place in GT3 at Imola. At the 24 Heures du Mans they came with both cars, M4 GT3 #31 (chassis #22044) and #46 (chassis #22046). Moreover, Team WRT also had two M Hybrid V8 hypercars, so expectations were high. Yet, one hypercar DNF (accident) and the other DNC. With the GT3 class things finished better, even though an accident took out #41 on the 109th lap. Conversely, the M4 GT3 #31 did well, finishing 28th overall and second in the GT3 class. Coincidentally also piloted by Brazilian Augusto Farfus, from my hometown 😎. Unfortunately, BMW GT cars were never very successful at La Sarthe. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, this was the best result for a GT car. Nonetheless, in scale, Spark always achieves GREAT results, and M4 GT3 #31 here is no exception. Maybe not a model for everyone but a must have for the bimmer and/or Le Mans nut.

PS: The M4 GT3 is cool enough to become a Lego set, supposedly coming out in March 2026

2024 BMW M4 GT3 #31Pilots: A.
