So in 1998 Audi started it\u2019s own program,  eyeing both the Le Mans 24 Hours and the ALMS races. For the 1999  season the barchetta <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w-143.com\/index.php\/audi-r8r-8-ixo\/\" target=\"_blank\">R8R<\/a>,  developed jointly with Dallara, was ready and even managed a 3rd and  4th places at La Sarthe. With the good results of 1999, Audi decided to  stick to the open-top style, so the R8 was the evolution of the R8R.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/a-h\/audi_r8_1_03.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Audi ownd the podium in 2002.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by Audi Motorsport and Joest Racing, it started out winning it\u2019s first race, the 12 Hours of Sebring of 2000. The chassis of the car  was said to be like a Lego model, where everything could be quickly  changed. For instance, on other cars it would take up to one to  three hours to change a damaged transaxle. However, the Joest team could do  the same job on the R8 in little over three minutes! The engine was a  90\u00ba <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/fourtitude.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/2001-audi-r8-prototype-rm-auctions-monterey-2012-003-960x639.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">V8<\/a>  with DOHC , 32 valves and fed by FSI direct fuel injection. Displacing  3596 cm\u00b3 and turbocharged by twin Garrett turbochargers it could produce  610 hp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/a-h\/audi_r8_1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Audi R8\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Most of the competition got nervous when saw this in their rear-view mirror.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Audi R8 took La Sarthe truly by storm. In the 2000 race, team Joest managed a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/audimediacenter-a.akamaihd.net\/system\/production\/media\/41000\/images\/f138be609d553761e1779e6f3049ee1d2c9a05a3\/A1612643_full.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">1-2-3<\/a> victory, and the following year the R8 won again, in a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/msmproduction.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/s3fs-public\/content\/WEC\/Audi%20quits\/img_7151.234497.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">1-2<\/a>  victory. For 2002 the R8 was back at La Sarthe, and besides Audi  Joest\u2019s two works cars there were two more R8s in the race, and once  again the R8 crossed the finish line in a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn-2.motorsport.com\/static\/img\/amp\/800000\/840000\/843000\/843100\/843122\/s6_2482741\/lemans-24-hours-of-le-mans-2002-the-overall-winner-emanuele-pirro-with-johnny-herbert-and.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">1-2-3<\/a> victory. This is the winning R8 (chassis #601), the car responsible for Audi\u2019s third overall victory at La Sarthe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w-143.com\/+upload\/zgroup\/audis_01.jpg\" alt=\"Audi R8\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I wonder why Audi skipped the 9&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It took me a while, but I finally have a mighty R8  in the Garage. Certainly,  one of the all-time great cars of the 24  Hours of Le Mans. It\u2019s a Minichamps DE model, but above all one little detail makes  it extra-special.
